| Even though a website is secured, are the people behind the website able to decrypt or read my private information? (Because I have sent credit card information to purchase merchandise at a secure site, but the site didn't send me the merchandise, didn't charge me either, and the whole site went down after about 2 weeks after my initial purchase.) The site was overstockclearancegifts.com So were they able to get my credit card information?

| I hope not because then they got mine too. I think I am going to cancel my credit card though, just to be safe

An SSL Certificate will encrypt your credit card information while it is transmitted to the website server. It is then decrypted so that it can be read in plain text. So even if you have the "lock icon" in your browser the website that you send the information to will have all of that information, just not anyone in between. If you suspect the website is fraudulent, you had better cancel your credit card.
